Workshop Description: Join local artist Jennifer Peart in this colorful watercolor workshop featuring our favorite California wildflowers. Biologists predicted another wildflower super bloom this year and the flowers have already popped open across the area! The California poppy, lupine, and goldfield native wildflowers are the orange, violet, and yellow blankets seen covering our rolling hills in the golden state. Orange bush monkey-flower and mariposa lilies are some of our other local favorite native wildflowers!
In this workshop we will explore introductory watercolor techniques in order to document and explore the natural world around us. Using pencil and watercolor, we will study and sketch 3-5 types of native California flowers: the California golden poppy, Arroyo Lupine, California Goldfields, Orange Monkey-flower, and the Mariposa Lily.
In this workshop we will learn:
What to pack for nature journaling/watercoloring in the wild
Basic observational drawing practices
How to take your simple pencil sketch to a watercolor illustration with a dash of color theory and shading technique thrown in
Step-by-step drawing and painting of 3-5 wildflowers
Numerous tips for sketching, drawing, and noticing
We will make our sketches using botanical drawing and photo references. We will start this workshop with blank pages in our sketchbooks and finish with multiple watercolor illustrations of California native wildflowers. All watercolor supplies will be provided, but feel free to bring any of your favorite art supplies. Water, sparkly water, and light snacks will also be provided.
This workshop is designed for watercolor beginners, but all abilities are welcome! I believe a refresher on techniques and tools can be helpful for all ability levels. Everyone will have the opportunity to broaden their abilities. This class is designed for adults, but mature teenagers are welcome to attend with an accompanying adult participant AND their own ticket.
This workshop takes place at the lovely Swoon Studio in Old Folsom. Please arrive in time for public parking in this historic neighborhood.
