"Grove Matrix" is one of three paintings created for a special call for art on reclaimed and recycled materials. This piece was made on a slab of reclaimed redwood sourced from the Sacramento Tree Foundation's Urban Wood Rescue yard, connecting material and subject in a tangible way. The composition centers on a holy graphic element that radiates across the knots and burls of a grove of our favorite conifers, celebrating their ancient forms and intricate textures. Painting on redwood allowed the natural grains and imperfections to interact with the artwork, adding depth and resonance. The piece has been exhibited in Sacramento as well as among the redwoods in Santa Cruz, and its graphic motifs reflect the influence of visionary science fiction authors, whose optimism inspires imagining a brighter future for our planet. Acrylic, pastel, and colored pencil on reclaimed redwood slab. D rings and wire hardware included.
