Littoral Passage - Archival print
“Littoral Passage” is my pink pastel homage to Pfeiffer Beach. This location is a sought-after destination for locals and tourists alike traveling through Big Sur along Highway 1. People come from all over the world to experience this iconic drive along the Pacific Ocean. I had the privilege of growing up within a day trip of the coast, and road trips and camping were my family’s favorite way to vacation.
I remember my first encounters with the ocean as a young person - tasting saltwater after getting knocked over by a wave while attempting to body surf in the cold Northern California waters. Many people outside California imagine all of our beaches as warm and sunny like Venice Beach, but from Santa Cruz northward the ocean is usually cold, even in the summer. The North Coast hits differently, as some folks say, and it has always been my favorite. Big Sur was one of my earliest coastal camping experiences.
Even now, I can almost smell the landscape while writing this - a mix of coastal redwood, eucalyptus, shrubs, and salty ocean air. I can hear the waves crashing into the sculptural rocks along Pfeiffer Beach. Big Sur has long been a sanctuary for artists and writers, and you understand why as soon as you see the dramatic coastline and breathe the crisp ocean air.
Not far away in the Carmel-Monterey area, a women’s artist colony formed in the late 1800s and early 1900s when a group of women left the bustle of San Francisco to create their own artistic community along the coast. They came seeking creative freedom, inspiration, and a different pace of life shaped by nature. Knowing this history deepens my own connection to this landscape - a reminder that artists have long been drawn here to observe, reflect, and make work in response to the powerful meeting of land and sea.
The original painting was made using oil, acrylic, and pastel on wood panel.
