Lone Forester - Original painting on redwood slab

$1,400.00

"Lone Forester" is one of three paintings created for a special call for art on reclaimed and recycled materials. While some colleagues painted on used skateboards and hubcaps, this piece was made on a slab of reclaimed redwood sourced from the Sacramento Tree Foundation's Urban Wood Rescue yard. The foundation removes fallen trees from local neighborhoods and resells the wood to fund tree planting in areas lacking shade. Working with this rescued wood, I wielded a chainsaw to cut the slab into three pieces, integrating a knotted branch into the center of "Lone Forester"’s composition. Painting redwoods on redwood offered a unique, resonant experience, connecting the material and subject in a tangible way. The piece has been exhibited in Sacramento as well as among the redwoods in Santa Cruz, and its graphic elements reflect the influence of visionary science fiction authors, whose optimism inspires imagining a brighter future for our planet. Acrylic, pastel, colored pencil on reclaimed redwood slab. D rings and wire hardware included.
