Monuments in Mirror - Framed original painting
In “Monuments and Mirror”, the Teton Range rises like a procession of stone guardians, reflected in the still surface of the Snake River - a mirror that doubles not only the mountain forms but also their meaning. This painting invites the viewer to dwell in a moment of stillness where land and sky fold into each other, where reflection becomes revelation.
At the center of this composition are a pair of obelisks, their smooth verticality both in harmony with and distinct from the jagged peaks behind them. Like other works in the Sagebrush and Stone series, these geometric forms act as thresholds - markers of transformation and witness. The obelisks echo standing stones, sentinels, and spiritual monuments. They are not meant to dominate the landscape, but to converse with it. Positioned between earth and sky, they embody a human longing to connect with the vastness of time and place.
Set within the landscape of Grand Teton National Park, this painting draws from the layered histories embedded in the land: tectonic shifts, glacial carving, Indigenous presence. Long before roads and boundaries, the valley was - and continues to be - a sacred homeland to Indigenous Nations including the Shoshone, Bannock, Crow, and others. Their knowledge systems and spiritual relationships to this place run deeper than the river and longer than the shadows of mountains.
“Monuments and Mirror” is both an homage and a meditation: on the way landscapes shape us, on what it means to be in dialogue with place, and on how memory can live in stone, water, and reflection. It is a visionary landscape - one that bridges what we see with what we carry, inviting viewers to contemplate the visible and the invisible, the monumental and the mirrored, and the enduring spirit of the land itself.
