The painting reimagines a lost landscape, honoring the valley's rich diversity of basket-weaving reeds, blue dicks wildflowers, and its significance to Indigenous peoples. Before the introduction of sheep pasturing and the construction of the reservoir, Hetch Hetchy was among the region's most fertile and populated valleys. With no photographic or painted documentation of this period, the work fills that void, inspired by the history and the story of John Muir, who worked as a shepherd in Hetch Hetchy and later fought to protect this sacred place.
