Sage-lined Saltwinds - Original painting

$5,600.00

Painted on a hand-built arched wood panel inspired by historic California architecture, Sage-lined Saltwinds captures the windswept coastal atmosphere of Cabrillo National Monument on the Point Loma peninsula. The monument stands within the ancestral homelands of the Kumeyaay people, who know this place as ’Amat Kunyily’, often translated as “where the water meets the cliffs.” This painting honors that enduring relationship between land, ocean, and cultural memory.

Blanketed by native coastal sage scrub and sunlit vegetation, the composition looks outward across the Pacific Ocean in layered bands of saturated color under a whimsical moon. The painting draws inspiration from the monument’s panoramic vistas and biodiverse tide pools. You can almost smell the salt-heavy winds moving through the maritime chaparral and the feeling of standing at the continent’s edge.

Rather than centering colonial narratives, Sage-lined Saltwinds focuses on the ecological richness and deep-rooted Indigenous presence of this coastline. Through luminous color relationships and spatial inversions, the work reimagines Point Loma as both a physical landscape and a living threshold shaped by ocean currents, native plants, ancestral stewardship, and time.
