Salmon's Freedom Flow - Archival print
“Salmon’s Freedom Flow” is a visionary landscape inspired by the newly undammed Klamath River at the J.C. Boyle Dam removal site in Keno, Oregon. Once constrained by concrete and infrastructure, the river is shown here in her state of release, moving freely through her ancestral path and carrying memory, motion, renewal, and hope.
This painting honors decades of environmental activism led by multiple indigenous tribes - from the Yurok on the lower Klamath, the Karuk of the mid-Klamath, and the Klamath Tribes - who worked collectively and persistently to bring down the dam and restore the river’s natural rhythms. The return of Chinook and Coho salmon to their homelands is not only an ecological milestone, but a cultural and spiritual homecoming, an affirmation of Indigenous sovereignty, stewardship, and deep relational knowledge of place.
Flowing water has long been a symbol of resilience. In a time often dominated by narratives of climate terror, the waters of “Salmon’s Freedom Flow” center hope, reminding us that real change is possible when communities dream beyond extractive systems forced upon them and when we come together to commit to long term care of the land. The river’s movement reflects a future shaped not by domination, but by listening, restoration, reciprocity, and radical imagination.
This work bridges what has been broken and what is still becoming. It invites viewers to witness a moment of healing in motion and to imagine other rivers, ecosystems, and futures made free through collective action and enduring hope. I hold this vision for other sacred places worthy of restoration, where beauty, balance, and function can once again flow together.
The original painting was made using oil, acrylic, and pastel on wood panel.
